Starting and formalising a business can be a significant milestone for women entrepreneurs. In Malawi, the digitalisation of business registration is making it easier for entrepreneurs to complete key registration steps online, helping them move from an informal business operation towards greater recognition and compliance.
The guide on online business registration in Malawi provides practical, step-by-step guidance on registering a business through the Malawi Business Registration System (MBRS). It explains what entrepreneurs need before starting, how to create and verify an MBRS account, select the appropriate registration service, complete and submit the application, and pay the registration fee online.
The guide also explains what happens after submission, including tracking the application, receiving notifications and downloading the Business Registration Certificate once approved. It concludes with important next steps, including applying for a Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN), obtaining any required local business licence and opening a business bank account.
This guide was prepared GOPA AFC under the IYBA WE4A Programme and adapted from training materials developed by Umodzi Consulting for women-led MSMEs in Malawi.
