Formalising a business can be an important step towards growth, credibility and access to new opportunities. For women-led micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Malawi, “From Invisible to Investable: Registering Your Business in Malawi” provides practical guidance on why business formalisation matters and how entrepreneurs can get started.
The IYBA WE4A knowledge brief explains the difference between informal and formal businesses and highlights the benefits of formalisation. A registered business can protect its name, improve credibility with clients and investors, open a separate business bank account, and become better positioned to access loans, grants, tenders and formal supply contracts.
The guide also provides a step-by-step pathway to formalisation, covering tax registration with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), business registration through the Malawi Business Registration System (MBRS), local council licences and sector-specific permits. It also explains the different business structures—including sole proprietorships, partnerships, cooperatives and private limited companies—to help entrepreneurs choose the structure that best fits their business and growth ambitions.
Importantly, the guide addresses common concerns about formalisation, including the perception that a business is too small to register or that the process is too complicated. It emphasises that formalisation can be gradual, allowing entrepreneurs to start with the basics and add further compliance requirements as their business grows.
The knowledge brief also includes a pre-registration checklist and common mistakes to avoid, helping women entrepreneurs prepare for registration and maintain compliance.
